Online Safety Tips for Seniors

As we begin the new year, our computers and devices face a new threat. It has just been announced that Apple and PC computers and devices are vulnerable from a massive cyber security flaw.

The two new security flaws, “Meltdown” and “Spectre”, were discovered by workers at Google, and all apparently all computer chips that are part of nearly all modern computers are vulnerable.

While Apple, Mocrosoft and other vendors scramble to fix the problem and provide security patches, this is a good time to review online safety tips.  Seniors are considered a soft target by hackers and online criminals. 
Here are some useful tips:

1. Always update your computer or device with the latest security software and patches. For the Meltdown and Spectre scenario, Google has posted a list of all affected devices here
2. Keep your personal information to yourself; do not divulge personal information online to anyone, unless you know the person and there is a good reason. Always ask the question yourself; “Why do they need this information?” “What alternative methods are there to complete this request without giving them my information?”
3. Always check the Privacy settings and options for any website that you sign up or use regularly. Facebook has very specific privacy settings, look at how you can use those settings to limit who sees your profile and how they interact with you online.
4. Browse safely: this means avoiding websites that are unsafe or may appear dubious. A 50% coupon from a dubious website for a major retailer might not be genuine. Visit the store’s website directly and check if the “special offer” appears there too, or call them to confirm.
5. Using Public Wifi: Always make sure that your connection is secure when you use public Wifi, including the library, coffee shops and other public access points. Avoid providing personal information such as bank passwords when using public Wifi unless you are absolutely certain the network and your device are safe.
6. Downloading malware; Beware of downloading content from the internet that may contain malware or viruses.   Always check the website address that you are downloading from to make sure it is the correct website address for the organisation that sent the link.
7. Use strong passwords for your email addresses and any websites that you have accounts created.
8. Be careful who you talk to online and what you talk about, especially strangers.
9. Keep your anti virus program updated. It is vital to keep your antivirus program updated always. Most programs have an automatic update feature. Check to make sure that it is turned on and do not ignore or cancel updates as they come.
10. If you are not sure about an email or any link, don’t touch it. Call someone to ask first, or do more research. Better safe than sorry.
