Should I forget all my passwords and start using passkeys to access my accounts? PassKeys or password? That's an important question many of you have been asking, so let's answer it together.

If you've ever stared at a login screen wondering whether your password had a capital letter, an exclamation mark, or that number you swore you'd never forget, you're not alone. Passwords have frustrated all of us for years. The good news? There's a newer, safer, and far simpler way to log in, and it's called a passkey.

What exactly is a passkey?

Think of a passkey as a digital key that lives safely inside your own device, your phone, tablet, or computer. Instead of typing out a password, you simply unlock your account the same way you unlock your phone: with your fingerprint, your face, or the PIN you already use.

Behind the scenes, your device and the website do a quick, secure "handshake" to confirm it's really you. The private key never leaves your device, so there's nothing for a thief to steal. You don't have to remember anything at all. 

Why are passkeys so much safer?
This is where passkeys really shine, especially for protecting yourself from the scams and fraud that target older adults.

First, passkeys can't be phished. If a scammer sends you a fake email pretending to be your bank, there's no password for you to accidentally hand over, because there's no password to type. A fake website simply cannot intercept a passkey the way it can capture a password. 

Second, passkeys can't be leaked in a data breach. You may have heard news stories about companies having millions of passwords stolen. With passkeys, the website only stores a harmless "public" half of the key, the secret half stays locked inside your device.

Third, passkeys can't be guessed or cracked. A standard computer in 2026 can crack a typical eight-character password in about twelve minutes, but there is no way to crack a passkey at all. In fact, organizations that switched to passkeys have seen account break-ins drop by more than 90 percent.

And reassuringly, this isn't some experimental fad. Google reports that more than 800 million accounts now use passkeys, and Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and many banks all support them.

How do I set up a passkey? (It only takes a few minutes)
The lovely thing is you don't need any new equipment, just a reasonably modern phone, tablet, or computer that you can unlock with a fingerprint, face, or PIN. Here's the general approach:

1. Make sure your device has a lock set up. This means a PIN, fingerprint, or face unlock is already turned on. (If you can unlock your phone, you're ready.)
2. Sign in to one of your accounts as you normally would, for example, your Google, Apple, Amazon, or Microsoft account.
3. Look in the account's "Security" or "Sign-in" settings for an option that says Create a passkey or Set up a passkey.
4. Confirm with your fingerprint, face, or PIN when prompted. That's it, your passkey is created and saved.
5. Next time you log in, just choose "Continue with passkey" and unlock with your fingerprint or face. No typing required.

Your passkeys are also backed up safely. On an iPhone or iPad they sync through iCloud Keychain, and on Android they sync through Google Password Manager, so if you get a new phone, your passkeys come along with you.

So, should I throw away all my passwords?
Not just yet, and that's perfectly fine. The best approach is to start small. Add a passkey to one important account you use often, perhaps your email or your Google account, and get comfortable with how it feels. You can keep your password as a backup while you do. Over time, as more of your accounts offer passkeys, you can switch them over one by one.
You don't have to do it all at once, and you don't have to do it alone.
