We all understand the concept of spring cleaning. After a long winter we begin to clean and prepare our houses for the new and freshness that comes with Spring. But what about our digital lives? Is it any different?

Most of us could agree that our digital lives are just as much in need of a thorough cleaning. Thousands of unread emails in our inboxes, our computer desktops cluttered with unnecessary files, cameras filled with multiple double shots and forgotten screenshots. This digital disorder does not just take vital storage from our hard drive, but also our mental space. Often harbouring anxiety, procrastination and a sense of untidiness.

If you want to begin this new season with not only a physically clean space but also a digital reset. Then this simple, 5-step guide to declutter may be of some help.

1. The Great Email Purge
  • Start where the mess is often deepest: your inbox.
  • Unsubscribe Ruthlessly: Before you delete, stop the flow. If you haven't opened a marketing email in six months, click "unsubscribe."
  • Mass Delete: Sort your inbox by "sender." If you have hundreds of emails from an old job or an online retailer you no longer use, select them all and delete.
  • Aim for "Inbox Five" (not Inbox Zero): Keep your current work or personal priority emails (no more than five) visible. Archive or file everything else.

2. Streamline Your Home Screens
Your device’s home screen is prime digital real estate.
  • The "One Screen" Rule: Limit your smartphone to one or two screens. Move rarely used apps into folders or (better yet) delete them entirely.
  • Cull Your Apps: Be honest. When was the last time you used that game or that specialty app? Delete anything that doesn't serve a daily or essential purpose.
  • Simplify Your Computer Desktop: Your computer desktop is not a file storage system! Create a few broad folders (e.g., "Active Projects," "Receipts," "Personal") and file away all the loose documents.

3. Tame the Notification Beast
The constant pinging of notifications is a leading cause of digital stress.
  • Disable is Your Friend: Go into your settings. The default for most apps is to send you a push notification for everything. Turn them OFF for social media, games, news alerts, and most retail apps.
  • Protect Your "Flow": Only keep notifications active for communication essentials, e.g Calls or family chats, etc.

4. The 10-Minute Photo Fix
Photo libraries are the biggest culprits of emotional digital clutter.
  • Don’t Try to Organize it All at Once: Commit just 10 minutes a day. Pick one month (e.g., May 2023) and swipe through.
  • The "Three-D" System: Keep the Best; delete the Duplicates, Duds (blurry, bad angle), and Digital Noise (screenshots, memes).

5. Create a Maintenance Ritual
A clean digital house doesn't stay clean.
  • Daily Check-In: At the end of each day, spend five minutes clearing your download folder and organizing your current workspace documents.
  • Weekly Reset: Every Friday (or Sunday), review your email inbox and clear out those temporary files that accumulated during the week.

The essence of digital decluttering is not just deleting old emails;but intentionally creating a space of calm and efficiency. Starting this process is often the hardest part, but by taking it one device and one 10-minute session at a time. You can reclaim your focus and simplify your life, for this new season
